Inside the Preservation Co showroom in Huntsville, Alabama

Our Story

A Family Business,
Built on Old Things.

Preservation Company is the work of Jason and Christa Butler — a husband-and-wife team whose shared love of architecture, historic preservation, and timeless design became a lifelong project. Jason brings twenty years of homebuilding and historic restoration to the bench.

In 2016, we purchased the 1927 Lincoln Commissary building in downtown Huntsville and spent a year restoring it ourselves. We opened the doors in November 2017. A few months later, the restoration earned Downtown Huntsville’s Project of the Year.

What started as a curated collection of reclaimed doors now spans architectural salvage, furniture, hardware, art, and the small objects that make a house feel like it has always been there. Every piece passes through the hands of our carpenters before it reaches yours.

Come See It in Person

Walk the Floor in Huntsville.

A photograph can only show you so much. Come stand with the pieces — run your hand along a century-old door, weigh the iron in a salvaged sconce, catch the scent of oiled walnut. Our showroom, set inside the restored 1927 Lincoln Commissary, is open most days of the week and always worth the drive.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ I was searching for the perfect vintage pantry door at a reasonable price, and The Preservation Company exceeded every expectation. Since I’m not local and everything was handled online, outstanding customer service was incredibly important to me—and they absolutely delivered. Every person I worked with was knowledgeable, responsive, and genuinely helpful. They patiently answered all of my questions, sent additional photos, and made thoughtful recommendations based on the ideas and style I was looking for. What impressed me most was that even though I spoke with multiple team members, everyone had clearly reviewed the notes from our previous conversations, so I never had to repeat myself. That level of communication and attention to detail is rare. Before finalizing my order, they even took the time to call me to go over everything and make sure I was getting exactly what I wanted. I truly appreciated that extra level of care and personal service. I haven’t seen my door in person yet, but based on my experience so far, I couldn’t be happier. I can’t wait to install it in our new home! As someone who works in customer service myself, I have very high expectations, and The Preservation Company exceeded them. I highly recommend them to anyone looking for quality reclaimed pieces backed by exceptional customer service.

Loved my time here. They have a gorgeous curation of decor and furniture made of natural elements. I was helped by Rudy, who was extremely kind and helpful. Literally had the best experience.

I visited this store specifically looking for cremone hardware. The items were displayed in a bin containing multiple identical pieces, with pricing clearly taped to that bin. After selecting the components and bringing them to checkout, I was quoted over $100 more than the displayed price. When I questioned the discrepancy, I was told children move items around and that employee issues had caused pricing mistakes before. That explanation was frustrating because if this has happened multiple times, it seems like pricing accuracy should be addressed rather than passed on to customers. What disappointed me most wasn’t necessarily the higher price , it was the complete lack of effort to resolve the situation. No attempt was made to honor the displayed pricing, clarify the error in a reasonable way, or offer any compromise. Earlier in my visit, I had also asked about door pricing and received vague answers because many items apparently have no listed prices. I value businesses that sell architectural salvage and specialty pieces, but transparency and customer service matter. I likely would have purchased the hardware even at the higher price if the experience had felt honest, helpful, and customer-focused rather than dismissive. Unfortunately, I left feeling misled and frustrated. Beautiful inventory does not make up for inconsistent pricing and poor customer service.

FAQ

Everything You’d Want to Ask.

Thoughtful answers to the questions we hear most — about custom work, shipping, installation, and the honest imperfections of reclaimed pieces.

  • Not quite — we are continuously adding new pieces, and many are one-of-a-kind. If you are searching for something specific, call or email us and we will check the floor for you.

  • Our current lead time is 6–10 weeks. Simpler modifications — a trim to height, a glass swap — typically ship in 2–4 weeks. We will give you a firm window when we confirm your order.

  • Yes, we ship throughout the contiguous United States, primarily via FedEx Freight with residential liftgate service. Please allow 3–4 weeks for processing. A few remote zip codes require a personalized quote.

  • Often, yes. We can trim most doors by height, width, or both, and can adjust stiles and rails on glass doors to maintain visual symmetry. When a piece cannot be modified, we will help you source one that fits.

  • No. Our doors arrive as slabs. We can build a custom jamb for single doors or French pairs, with weather stripping and thresholds available for exterior installations.

  • In most cases, yes. We stock textured, privacy, and tempered glass, and recommend tempered for exterior doors and large panes.

  • We offer local delivery quotes for customers within 100 miles of our Huntsville showroom. Larger local orders often qualify for custom delivery pricing.

  • Yes, and they are the point. Nicks, cracks, and patina are part of how a piece earns the next hundred years in your home. We sand, patch, and seal to preserve character, not erase it.
