THE uTILIZATION OF DOORS: A JOURNEY

CAPTION: We have clients who want to use our doors for traditional entryways, for panties, bathrooms and master suites. Some of our clients continue to surprise us with unconventional means of door placement. Two un-stripped doors, joined together makes this bedroom pop with color and creativity.

When clients visit us and share their homebuilding or remodeling plans, they often have a design, style and size in mind of the doors they want. They already know how many they need, what style, types of glass etc. They’ve been planning, pre-planning, reading design blogs and magazines, saving hundreds upon hundreds of photos, all with the intended goal of capturing as much of of their vision and transforming it into reality. A different kind of client will come in, plans at the ready and bring with them a much different take.
When it comes to doors, they bring a wholly unique take. They want to make a bold statement and declare "I’m not going follow the rules and trends when it comes to my design." And we love that. That is the awesome, beautiful, wonderful thing about interior design. Well any design for that matter. There are no rules. There is only your taste. (Pretty sure that’s been said by someone somewhere before.) So when this client wants to join four French doors together, suspend them from the ceiling to create a majestic floating headboard for their California King, it makes it easy for us to get on board. We love to be surprised and at Preservation Company, we are so fortunate to have customers that see our products and want to put their own stamp on it. We believe imagination is part of any design process and we encourage mold breaking whenever the opportunity presents itself. Wherever your design may take you, bring your most imaginative self to the party. Believe that any design is within reach and you won’t be disappointed in the outcome. In hopes of generating some unique and creative ideas of your own, we want to share some outside the box projects featuring doors.

A VISUAL GUIDE TO INCORPORATING RECLAIMED DOORS

"BE FAITHFUL TO YOUR OWN TASTE, BECAUSE NOTHING YOU REALLY LIKE IS EVER OUT OF STYLE." ALBERT HADLEY, AMERICAN INTERIOR DESIGNER

Out of the ordinary when it comes to door placement in a home doesn’t mean you have to suspend a vintage door from the ceiling or hang it on the wall as a piece of art (although that is most certainly falls into the cool category). Some customers invite curiosity and multicolored textures by using unstripped doors. When sourcing doors, we have every intention of procuring and leaving some doors unstripped and natural. These doors often have layers of paint that due to moisture, air and time, have begun to chip away and flake off creating a rich patina of colors. This color pattern can provide a beautiful contrast to white walls and dark wood accents.  They impart a richness and a curiosity that’s worthy of a historical landmark placard complete with birthdate, full history, and a general estimation of how many wars it survived over a century and half. Although door placement in a traditional sense can be fairly self explanatory, choosing the right door, style and size can be an arduous process for customers. Variations upon variation can make the door selection process stressful. Our goal is to make these simple for our customers by providing an educational and design consultation to talk through the choosing process. On most doors we offer customization services that help narrow things down for our clients. From sizing to glass options and hardware choices, we take pride delivering the right door for the right spot in a home. Talking through tastes and personal preferences when it comes to design styles helps.

Talking through tastes and personal preferences when it comes to design styles helps us to organically guide our customers to the right fit. The most common use cases for our customers involves incorporation into pantries, master suites, bathrooms, offices and front door entryways. Many of our clients choose from our French and British style doors, which in many cases are above standard height. If you are in the process of remodeling or building, going the reclaimed door route can not only save you a tremendous amount of money, but it also affords the opportunity to select size according to your design. If tall ceilings are in the cards, then breaking away from standard height doors can

help match the verticality of the room. Working closely with your contractor on appropriate sizing for larger doors will ensure you achieve the right fit. If you are in the early planning stages or haven’t yet begun your remodeling or construction project, this is the time to allow for some added creativity. You aren’t boxed into a specific size if the framing hasn’t yet begun and if there is a unique way you’re looking to incorporate a door, you have a lot more leeway than if the door openings throughout the home are already framed. In cases of which our clients are in the middle or later stages of their project and are shopping for doors, the options can become a little more limited. But this is where our carpenters and craftsmen shine. They can trim, cut, shave mold and repair the door or doors of your choice to achieve the proper fit.
There will always challenges. Any home project naturally comes with hurdles that take a little more effort than first envisioned. We think that’s the fun part of it. It makes the final product and the reward that comes with it that much more special. We look forward to you bringing your challenges with you when you visit. We love being challenged and we love the creative process and the complexities that come from out of the box design ideas. So come equipped with your most out in left field design concepts. Don't let anyone tell you it can't be done or it's not practical. At Preservation Company, we invite mold breaking. So come with blueprints in tow and we'll supply the doors, hardware, and wire that will suspend your best ideas to whatever part of your home you see fit.
